RECORD GRAIN HARVEST IN BRAZIL IN 2026 AND A HISTORIC STORAGE CRISIS

Brazil is heading toward one of the largest harvests in its history in 2026, with an estimated production of 353 million tons of grains. However, behind this historic milestone lies a structural bottleneck that concerns the entire sector: the lack of storage capacity in the country.
According to the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA), the storage deficit is expected to reach around 135 million tons this year. This means that Brazilian warehouses are only able to store 61% of total production, the lowest coverage level in the past two decades. In practice, the country is producing more and more, but its infrastructure is not keeping up with this growth.
This mismatch is the result of a challenging economic scenario. The high cost of building silos, which can range from R$ 10 million to R$ 25 million, combined with interest rates of around 15%, has been hindering new investments. Meanwhile, agricultural productivity has increased significantly in recent years, driven by technology and expansion of cultivated area, further increasing pressure on logistics.
Without the capacity to store production, many farmers are forced to sell immediately after harvest. This urgency reduces bargaining power, benefits large trading companies, and puts downward pressure on prices. In addition, the accelerated flow of goods increases logistics costs, especially freight, directly impacting the profitability of rural producers.
Given this scenario, the storage crisis is no longer just an operational issue but becomes a strategic challenge for Brazilian agribusiness.
